EDITORIAL Growing Pains

Three years ago the handful of women then comprising the membership of the DOB decided to "go for broke" and thus THE LADDER was born.

What started as a small, mimeographed "no wsletter" has now become a full-fledged nati onal magazine. But the re is still room for much improvement and expansi on much or more than marks the difference between our first issue and this one funds available and labor willing.

At this, the beginning of our fourth year of monthly publication, wo thought our readers might be interested in how the magazine is put together.

First the material arrives at the office articles, drawings for covers, letters to the editor and other miscellaneous items. This must all be read carefully, not only to see if it merits publication and that it violates no laws, but also for spelling, punctuati on, grammar, etc.

Besides the contributed material there are also staff articles, primarily editorial or reportorial.

From the material available, then,

some must be chosen

to appear in a particular issue. Some ti mos this is a difficult decision, and the space factor can be of preeminont considerati on. For instance, in the case of a long story and a short story of equal value, probably the short story will win out because of that very fact it is short and so allows for more variety in the issue.

After it is decided what stories and articles are to appear in an issue they must be typed up as they will be in the magazine four inches wide on the typewriters at THE LADDER office.
